5. Conducting Institutional Outreach and Building Allies

Sample PowerPoint Presentation about the Right to Counsel

This short presentation is designed to introduce potential stakeholders to the issues that underlay the need for a right to counsel, the importance and potential impact of the legislation itself and our coalition. The presentation ends with an ask to the Mayor to sign a petition. The presentation is designed to be brief and targeted for settings where time is limited, and it can be adapted to a variety of audiences.

Sample Community Board Resolution

This sample resolution shows what can result from outreach to community boards. We drafted the community board resolution, rather than leave it up to each board to write their own resolution. This made it easier for the board to sign on to it, and it ensured that what was being signed was helpful to our campaign since we drafted it. Such resolutions demonstrate key stakeholder support for the legislation, and are helpful in both leveraging other resources and exerting pressure on the mayor and other targets. This resolution can be used as a model for other community boards or similar bodies.

Sample Campaign Endorsement Letter

The following is an example of a memo from the NYC Bar Association in support of Right to Counsel legislation. The legal services community is a key constituency in advocating for the right, and these memos are a public way of concretizing their support of the campaign and legislation. Engaging legal organizations throughout your campaign and approaching them for support memos like this one, helps build public pressure for your legislation.

Endorsers of Implementation Principles

We compiled this list of endorsers after Mayor de Blasio announced his support for the bill but before the bill had passed. We were organizing for a just implementation and phase-in plan and it was important that we show the range of organizations that supported our coalition’s implementation principles. You can use this list to spark ideas about the types of organizations in your own city or state that you might want to outreach, ranging from community organizing groups to legal service providers to labor unions. Creating such a list not only recognizes and celebrates your supporters but also demonstrates to your target the strength of your coalition.
